The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.

At 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and gave him minutes in pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his age and experience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.

Under international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they play in a official full international.

He has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
