The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the identical stature as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and based in heritage that unite the community. Each year, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
