The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
