NY Introduces Reporting Tool for Citizens to Report Immigration Videos After Detentions of Four US Citizens

The state AG has launched a fresh digital platform asking residents to provide visual evidence of ICE operations throughout New York. This move follows a shortly after a significant ICE raid shook Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering large-scale outcry.

American Citizens Detained During Enforcement Action

A congressional representative disclosed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were detained and kept for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations erupted in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Each citizen deserves to reside free from terror," state officials stated in a release.

"If you witnessed and recorded ICE activity during the raid, I urge you to provide that evidence with us. We are committed to examining these reports and evaluating any legal breaches."

Portal Features

The portal includes fields to send photos and videos of the operation, along with a field to indicate location information. Prior to sending, submitters must tick a option that acknowledges that "the attorney general could utilize any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, including in a court case or government document."

Details of the Manhattan Operation

The enforcement action, which witnesses say included more than 50 federal agents, happened in a popular area of NYC where imitation purses, items, goods and other goods are commonly traded widely – frequently to visitors.

Recordings of the operation reveal numerous masked and armed officers securing and holding a person, and shoving away onlookers. Throngs of locals trailed the officers along the roads. An armored truck was also seen traveling down the Manhattan avenues.

Leadership Statements

During a Wednesday press conference organized with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, stated that four US citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where nationals should be arrested for no reason." He noted the individuals were freed on the following day with no legal action taken.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman stated. "This represents a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is purely a justification to provoke conflict for the government to deploy the armed forces to prevent conflict that they themselves caused."

Extensive Outcry

Anger over the federal action rapidly grew – all three mayoral candidates condemned the raid, as did NY's governor.

"Yet again, the Trump administration chooses authoritarian theatrics that create fear, instead of protection. It must stop," a contender stated.

The city's immigrant rights groups voiced concern also.

"Federal officers raided the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and protective equipment to go after small merchants trying to make a living. This operation had no relation to public safety and everything to do with intimidating residents and areas," stated the leader of a rights organization.

ICE Policies

Agency rules bans the arrest of American nationals and the agency has claimed it does not take into custody American nationals. Yet, external research has revealed that more than 170 US citizens have been held against their will by immigration authorities since the beginning of the current administration.

Recent Pattern

Immigration operations have been rising in frequency in the state and nationwide lately.

A mid-October raid in central NYC was the initial documented operation on an refuge facility of the present government. Rallies opposing ICE are commonplace along with accusations of force and cruel conditions.

Recently, a document submitted by civil rights groups claimed medical neglect of women with child in detention centers.
