Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Carrington

The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further business:

  1. The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
