Long-Forgotten Bach Works Presented for First Time in Over Three Centuries

Historical organ composition
Bach is considered to have created the two organ pieces early in his career

Recently identified musical pieces by the renowned composer Bach have been unveiled and executed in Germany for the first time in over three centuries.

The nation's Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer described the unearthing of the two compositions a "great moment for the global music scene".

They first caught the attention of Peter Wollny in 1992 when he was documenting the composer's papers at the Belgian royal collection.

The musical compositions - the Chaconne in D minor and Chaconne in G minor - were without dates and anonymous. The scholar spent the following three decades working to authenticate the authorship of the pieces.

Historic Performance

They were presented at the historic Leipzig church in Leipzig, where the composer is buried and where he served as a cantor for twenty-seven years.

The two pieces were executed by Dutch organist Ton Koopman, who said he was honored to be able to present them for the premiere in three hundred twenty years.

He said the works were "exceptionally well-crafted" and would be "an important addition for organists today, as they are also appropriate for more compact instruments".

Cultural Relevance

They are believed to have been composed during Bach's formative years, when he was serving as an organ instructor in the town of Arnstadt in central Germany.

The scholar, who is now the director of the Bach Archive in the municipality, said they displayed several features particular to the composer.

"Musically, the compositions also include elements that can be found in Bach's compositions from that time, but not in those of any other composer," he said.

They are thought to have been written down in 1705 by one of Bach's pupils, Salomon Günther John.

At a presentation of the works, Mr Wollny said he was "99.99% sure that Bach had created the two pieces" and they have now been included into the recognized inventory of his works.
