Israeli citizens mark two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace negotiations continue
People have gathered around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities delayed state memorials until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas delegations convened in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to review the provisions of the plan.
A prominent Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks said that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the morning session ended without tangible results, due to differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He noted that the talks are "tough and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to narrow the disparities between the both parties.
Critical Matters in Negotiations
- A permanent truce
- The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid distribution
- After-conflict governance of the territory
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - explained: "No place appears as home now and until every captive return no one will be secure."
"When we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.
Near the leader's residence in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the families of the abducted. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester a participant stated: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Research now frequently demonstrate that about the majority of the population prefer the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the area of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.
From there, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side area of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the dusk arrives, the anxiety appears with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."
Medical Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had accepted the bodies of six people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said two more fatalities had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get aid to the south region, medical staff reported.
