England to Launch Euro 2028 Quest at City’s Home Ground

The English squad will embark on their 2028 European Championship campaign at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they achieve the relatively straightforward qualification for a championship hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an English men’s fixture since the spring of 2016, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to stage the Three Lions for their inaugural game on Saturday 10 June 2028.

England are scheduled to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, should they win Group B, their last-16 tie would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Tournament Kickoff and Protest

The championship was unveiled at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday evening. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host FAs were barracked as they entered the location by about 50 protesters, who called for the Israeli team to be expelled from international football because of the Gaza crisis.

Placards were held up with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Timeline

The first match of the tournament will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will feature the Dragons if they secure a place.

The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at 5:00 PM.

It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be used for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will attract family audiences and help reach a more diverse set of viewers.

Host Nations

The Ireland are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would play similarly at the national stadium of Scotland.

The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for the tournament through the standard process.

Locations and Playoffs

Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground round out the event’s nine venues. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the last eight held at each country’s national stadium.

The qualification draw will be held in Belfast, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on a date in late 2026.

Tournament Vision

“The event will be a championship for the supporters and a celebration of everything we love about the sport – its emotion and ability to unite individuals.”

In excess of three million admissions, a unprecedented number for a UEFA European Championship, are anticipated to be offered to attendees.
