Despite Overwhelming Achievement, Clair Obscur Developers Intend to Keep Studio Lean

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not only a strong Game of the Year candidate, but also a massive financial hit. Studio the development team and publisher Kepler Interactive disclosed that the game surpassed 5 million units sold, this is even with its status as a launch-day addition through the Game Pass service.

The game's performance came as quite an unexpected turn for the team. I firmly believed that we would have a good game that would meet reasonable commercial success,” a senior team member stated.

The CTO and lead programmer pointed out this title's critical score, now standing at 93, came as the most surprising moment to the team relative to our early predictions and what the reality turned out to be. When the score released all staff members celebrated excitedly. The energy was electric.”

This triumph prompted Sandfall developing a free update for the game featuring fresh areas, foes, and boss fights, reportedly will release in the next few months.

Nevertheless, as the title expands, fans shouldn't anticipate the studio to grow. “We have an excellent group with a strong creative director with a clear direction for our work and also for new ideas. We intend to preserve the close-knit size that led to our success and do maybe one big game after another,” the executive noted.

The studio's scale generated a storm of discussion when the game came out. A few well-known creators, including renowned designers, viewed the development group as the “ideal” for game development. Although the team is and was truly compact versus large developers, one glance at Expedition 33’s credits reveals numerous contributors worked on it; Sandfall contracted a Korean team for animation work, as an instance.

“Some hiring will occur a bit more for sure should there be an increase in development down the line,” the executive stated. “However, I envision more of a workshop with a small number of really talented people that can make collective masterpieces.” He noted that Sandfall’s vision as a company “focuses on preserving the strengths that led to this accomplishment in the first place.”

Although it's premature for the studio to disclose concrete plans what’s next — believe me, I tried to get them to — they are certain what’s at its core. “Strategic combat, is integral to our identity of our creations,” they said. “It's a bit too early to announce our next interests, however, it's crucial to remain faithful to our studio's essence featuring rich storytelling and the interesting gameplay that drives our passion.”

They noted that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 started with the visionary pursuing his ideal project. And hopefully this approach we can continue with upcoming games.”
