Adult Swim's Premier New Show of 2025 Secures a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
